What is a Conservation Opportunity Area (COA)?

  • Missouri Department of Conservation joined with other agencies, organizations and communities to initiate a Comprehensive Wildlife Strategy.  Conservation Opportunity Areas were developed as priority places to implement these strategies.

  • Each Conservation Opportunity Area has a stakeholder team that develops a Conservation Opportunity Area profile. Teams determine goals and conservation actions. They also have resources available for public and private landowners interested in joining their local Conservation Opportunity Area efforts.

What areas are included in the Northwest Newton County COAs?

  • Shoal Creek COA - This includes areas south of Joplin along Shoal Creek, Wildcat Natural Area and the Wildcat Glades Conservation and Audubon Center.  A team was formed in 2005 to define strategies for the COA.  With the help of a Teaming with Wildlife Mini-grant program in 2009, the team was energized and started moving forward.
  • Diamond Grove COA - This includes areas around Diamond Grove Prairie and George Washington Carver Monument.  This area was added to the Shoal Creek team in 2009 to utilize an existing stakeholder team.
  • Wildwood Ranch COA - This includes an area on Shoal Creek, west of Joplin on 32nd Street.  This area was added to the Shoal Creek team in 2009 to utilize an existing stakeholder team.
